Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) invites applications from eligible candidates for admission to the academic programmes for the year 2008-09 as listed below. Admissions are based on

Common Admission Test (CAT)/

Departmental Admission Test (DAT)/

Test for Lateral Entry (LET).

Eligibility conditions and other particulars appear in the detailed notification published in the website www.cusat.nic.in. Candidates who have appeared/are appearing for their final qualifying examinations are also eligible to apply. Degrees obtained through distance education programmes other than through IGNOU are not recognized by the University.

 

Those who are applying for First Degree Programmes in Engineering & Technology

(B.Tech and Integrated M.Sc. in Photonics) : the CAT will be conducted on all India basis with test centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad,

Lucknow, Ranchi, Varanasi, Allahabad, Jamshedpur, Kota, all district head quarters of

Kerala and Overseas Centre at Dubai.

 

Those who are applying for PG Programmes / First Degree Programmes including LL.B

/ both Programmes : the CAT will be conducted only in the Centres at all the district head

quarters of Kerala and New Delhi.

 

The University reserves the right to cancel any or all the notified test centres for administrative reasons including dates/rules and regulations relating to programmes of

study, eligibility, reservation, admission criteria, fee structure and other relevent matters.

All disputes related to CAT shall be subject to the jurisdiction of Courts at Kochi only.

Appearance in the CAT or figuring in the Rank list does not ipso facto confer any right for admission to a particular course unless found suitable as per the elegibility criteria as

amended from time to time.

 

  1. ADMISSIONS THROUGH CAT-ONLINE REGISTRATION

 

Applicants for the following programmes are required to take the CAT, except where

specifically indicated otherwise

 

1.1 FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMMES

 

a. B.Tech. in Civil Engg.**, Computer Science & Engg.**, Electrical & Electronics Engg.**, Electronics & Communication Engg.**, Information Technology**, Mechanical Engg.**, Safety & Fire Engg.**.

                                                         

b. B.Tech. in Polymer Science & Rubber Technology

 

c. Five Year Integrated M.Sc. in Photonics

Eduational Qualification for a, b & c above: Pass in Plus Two Examination of the

State of Kerala with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any

other examination accepted as equivalent thereto securing a minimum of 50% marks

in Mathematics and 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.

 

d. B.Tech. in Instrumentation

Pass in Plus Two examination of the State of Kerala with Mathematics, Physics and

Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto

securing a minimum of 60% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together,

with at least 55% in Mathematics separately.

 

e. B.Tech. in Marine Engg. ** (Residential Programme)

1) Pass in Plus Two or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics

and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% marks and

should have obtained 50% marks in English at 10th or 12th standards.

 

2) Vocational/Diploma students are not eligible to apply.

 

3) The Maximum age limit prescribed is 20 years as on 1st October 2008.

 

f. B.Tech. in Naval Architecture & Ship Building.

Pass in Plus Two examination of the State of Kerala or any other examination accepted

as equivalent thereto with a First Class securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics as well as for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.

 

g. 5 Year LL.B. (Hons.) (Cost sharing course)

1. Pass in Plus Two examination with 60% marks in Science / Commerce group or 55%

marks in Arts / Humanities. 2.Should not have completed 21 years of age on 1st

January of the year of admission.

 

1.2  POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

 

LL.M.

 

Bachelor’s degree in Law with at least 45% marks.

 

M.A. Hindi Language and Literature

B.A./B.Sc. degree with Hindi as a subject of study with at least 45% marks in Hindi.

 

M.B.A. (Full-time / Part-time*).

A degree in any subject with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate. * conditions

apply.

 

M.B.A. (Travel and Tourism )**

A degree in any subject with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate

 

M.B.E. (Master of Business Economics)

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any subject including Engg., Technology, Agriculture

and Medicine recognized by the University with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks.

 

M.C.A.*** offered by CUSAT and its recognized institutions.

Any graduate with Mathematics as one of the main or subsidiary subjects or graduate

in Electronics/Computer Science/Computer Applications/Engg./Technology with

aggregate 55% marks in all subjects other than Languages and Humanities.

 

M.I.B. (Master of International Business)

A degree in any subject recognized by the University with a minimum of 50% marks

in aggregate.

 

M.Sc. Applied Chemistry

B.Sc. degree with Chemistry/Polymer Chemistry/Environmental Chemistry/Industrial

Chemistry/Petrochemicals as main, with Mathematics as one of the subsidiary subjects

with at least 55% marks in the main subject.

 

M. Sc. Biotechnology

Bachelor’s degree in any branch of Life Sciences including Agricultural and Medical

Science or Chemical Science or Chemical Engg. with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.

 

M.Sc. Electronic Science*

First class B.Sc. / B.Sc. (Hons.) degree with not less than 60% aggregate marks in

Electronics, Computer Science, or Physics (with Electronics). Candidates with higher

degrees are not eligible for admission.

* With specialisation in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics Microwave Electronics and

Computer Technology.

 

M. Sc. Environmental Technology

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with Physics and Mathematics as subsidiaries, or

Engg. (Civil/ Public Health/ Environmental or Chemical) or Life Sciences/ Environmental Sciences/Zoology/Botany/Microbiology with 55% marks.

 

M. Sc. Hydrochemistry

B.Sc. degree in Chemistry with Physics and Mathematics as subsidiaries or B.Sc.

degree of any University in Kerala with Polymer Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry/

Petrochemicals/Environment & Water Management as the main subject and

Mathematics and Physics/Computer Science, as subsidiaries with 55% marks in the

respective main subject.

 

M. Sc. Industrial Fisheries

Bachelor’s degree in Zoology/Botany/Fisheries with at least 55% marks in the optional

subjects. Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries includes bachelor’s degree in Industrial Fisheries,

Aquaculture/Fishery Science/Industrial Fish and Fisheries/BFSC in Nautical science.

 

M. Sc. Marine Biology

B.Sc. degree with any branch of Life Sciences such as Aquaculture, Bio-chemistry,

Biotechnology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology as a main subject or B.Sc. degree

in Fishery Science with at least 55% marks in the optional subjects.

 

M. Sc. Marine Geology

Bachelor’s degree, in Geology/Maths/Physics/Chemistry with 55% aggregate marks

for optionals.

 

M. Sc. Marine Geophysics

B.Sc. degree with at least 55% aggregate marks in (a) Geology (main) with Mathematics

and Physics or Chemistry as subsidiaries (b) Physics (main) with Mathematics and

Geology or Chemistry or Electronics as subsidiaries (c) Mathematics (main) with

Physics and Geology or Chemistry as subsidiaries.

 

M. Sc. Mathematics

B.Sc. degree with Mathematics main, with at least 55% marks for optional subjects

taken together.

 

M. Sc. Meteorology

B.Sc. degree with Physics/Mathematics as the main subject with 55% marks. Those

with Mathematics as the main subject should have studied Physics as one of the

subsidiary subjects and vice-versa.

 

M. Sc. Oceanography

B.Sc. degree with Physics/Mathematics as the main subject with 55% marks. Those

with Mathematics as the main subject should have studied Physics as one of the

subsidiary subjects and vice-versa.

 

M. Sc. Physics

B.Sc. degree with Physics main and Mathematics as subsidiary with at least 55% marks

in Physics.

 

M. Sc. Statistics

B.Sc. degree in Mathematics or Statistics with at least 55% marks for optional subjects

taken together.

 

  1. M.TECH. PROGRAMMES-ONLINE REGISTRATION

 

Admissions to the following M.Tech. programmes are based on valid GATE score as

prescribed under the academic regulations specific to each programme. Candidates not

possessing GATE may also apply, but will be considered only if GATE qualified candidates are not available. In such cases, admissions will be based on the DAT.

 

M. Tech. Atmospheric Science

1. M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Meteorology, Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics,

Space Physics with a First Class (60%) marks from any recognized university or

institution.

2. A valid GATE score or a pass in the Joint UGC CSIR Test (NET) for JRF.

 

M. Tech. Computer Aided Structural Analysis & Design

 

1. B.Tech or Equivalent degree in Naval Architecture and Ship building/Civil Engg./

Mechanical Engg. with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or

institution 2. A valid GATE score.

 

M. Tech. Computer & Information Science

1. B.Tech or equivalent degree in any discipline/AMIETE/AMIE or M.Sc. in Physics

with Electronics as special subject, or M.Sc. in Mathematics with a first class (60%)

marks from any recognized university or institution. 2. A valid GATE score.

 

M. Tech. Electronics (With specialization in Digital Electronics, Microwave & Radar Electronics)

1. B.Tech or equivalent degree/AMIE/AMIETE in Electronics and Communication

Engg./Electrical Engg./Electronics and Instrumentation or M.Sc. degree in Electronics/

Physics (with Electronics as specialization) with a first class (60%) marks from any

recognized university or Institution. 2. A valid GATE score in Electronics/Electronics

M. Tech. Engineering Statistics

1. B. Tech or equivalent degree or AMIE in any discipline with first class (60%) from

any recogonized university or Institution with valid GATE score.

 

M. Tech. Industrial Catalysis

1. M.Sc. degree in Chemistry/Applied Chemistry or any other degree recognized as

equivalent with atleast a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or

institution. 2. A valid GATE Score.

 

M. Tech. Marine Biotechnology

Minimum 60% Marks or equavalent CGPA in any one of the following from any

recognized Indian or Foreign University.

1. B. Tech/ BE in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Industrial

Biotechnology, Leather Biotechnology, Chemistry/Biotechnology, Biomedical

Engineering, B.Pharma, Chemical Technology;

B.Tech. or equivalent degree /AMIE in Civil Engg./Environmental Sciences with 60%

marks from any recognized university or institution. 2. A valid GATE score.

 

M. Tech. Opto-Electronics & Laser Technology

1. Masters degree in Physics/Electronics/Photonics/B.Tech. or BE in Electronics and

Communication Engg./Electronics Engg./Electrical Engg./Electrical and Electronics Engg. with a First Class (60%) from any recognized university or Institution 2. A valid GATE score.

 

M. Tech. Polymer Technology

1. B.Tech. or equivalent degree/AMIE in Polymer Science and Rubber

Technology/Chemical Engg. /Technology or M.Sc. Polymer Chemistry/M.Sc.

Chemistry with Polymer Chemistry as specialization with a first class (60%) marks

from any recognized university or institution. 2. A valid GATE score.

 

M. Tech. Software Engg.

1. B.Tech or equivalent degree or AMIE/AMIETE in Computer Science/Information

Technology or M.Sc. in Computer Software/Operations Research & Computer

Applications or MCA with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university

Applicants for the following programmes are required to take the DAT:

 

3.1 POST GRADUATE PROGRAMME

M. A. Translation (German/Russian)-Online Registration

Bachelor’s degree of any recognized University and Diploma level knowledge in the

language concerned.

 

3.2 DIPLOMA /CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES (PART-TIME)

a.Certificate courses in French/German/Japanese/Russian.

b. Diploma in Functional Arabic

 

c. Integrated Diploma in French/German/Italian/Japanese/ Russian

Educational Qualification for a, b & c above: Pass in Plus-two or equivalent. Previous

knowledge in the language concerned is not essential.

 

d. Diploma in French/German/Japanese/ Russian

Pass in Plus-two or equivalent and certificate level knowledge in the language concerned.

 

e. Diploma in Communicative English

Bachelors Degree in any discipline or any other exam equivalent as recognized by the

University with English as one of the subjects of study from a University.

 

f. P.G. Diploma in Translation and Functional Hindi

Bachelor’s degree with Hindi as one of the subjects

 

3.3 DIPLOMA PROGRAMME (FULL-TIME)

 

P.G. Diploma in Coastal Zone Management.

Bachelor’s degree in Engg./Master’s degree in Science from any university recognized

by CUSAT with at least 55% marks.

 

3.4 M. Phil. PROGRAMMES (FULL-TIME)

 

M. Phil. Chemistry, Commerce, Hindi, Physics and Mathematics.

Master’s degree in the concerned subject with at least 50% marks.

 

M. Phil. Applied Economics

Master’s degree in Economics with at least 50% aggregate marks.

 

M. Phil. Chemical Oceanography

Master’s degree in Chemistry with 50% marks.

 

M. Phil. Fisheries Science

MSc. Degree Industrial Fisheries / Marine Biology/Zoology/Aquatic Biology & fisheries/

Fishery Biology & Aquaculture/Capture and Culture Fisheries/Aquaculutre/M.F.Sc.

with 50% aggregate or an equivalent grade in PG..

 

M. Phil. Life Sciences

Master’s degree in Marine Biology/Zoology/ any branch of Life sciences such as Aquatic

Biology and Fisheries, Bio Chemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Fishery science with 60%

marks.

 

3.5 M.E By Research : (FULL-TIME and PART-TIME)

Bachelor’s degree in appropriate branch of Engg. from a recognized University with

60% marks in the qualifying examination and with 50% marks in the DAT.

 

3.6 Ph. D PROGRAMMES

 

Ph. D programmes are offered in all the teaching Departments/Schools and recognized

Institutions of the University. Candidates are advised to ascertain the areas of research

and the availability of vacancies from the Departments/Schools or Recognized

Institutions before-hand. Candidates intending to do research in the Recognized

Institutions of the University are to obtain application forms from the University

Departments/Schools dealing with the discipline of their choice.

are Applied Chemistry, Applied Economics, Biotechnology, Computer Applications,

Computer Science, CRDAT, Culture & Heritage, Electronics, Environmental Studies,

Hindi, Instrumentation, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Management Studies, Photonics,

Physics, Polymer Science & Rubber Technology, School of Engg., Ship Technology

and Statistics.

 

The University Departments/Schools located at the Lake Side Campus at Fine Arts

Avenue, Kochi-682 016 are Atmospheric Sciences, Chemical Oceanography, Industrial

Fisheries, Marine Biology, Microbiology & Biochemistry, Marine Geology &

Geophysics and Physical Oceanography.

 

4. LATERAL ENTRY (LET) TO B.TECH – ONLINE REGISTRATION

 

B.Tech. in Civil Engg., Computer Science & Engg., Electrical & Electronics Engg.,

Electronics & Communication Engg., Information Technology, Instrumentation,

Mechanical Engg., Polymer Science & Rubber Technology and Safety & Fire Engg.

Diploma recognized by the Boards of Technical Education of the States after

undergoing a regular course of 3 years duration with not less than 60% marks.

The maximum age prescribed is 25 years as on 1st July 2008.

 

5. IMPORTANT POINTS AT A GLANCE

 

1. Only Online applications will be considered for all B.Tech Programmes including Lateral Entry Programmes, Integrated M.Sc in Photonics, 5 year LL.B (Hons.), Post Graduate Programmes, M.Tech Programmes, M.A Translation in German & Russian.

 

2. For M.Phil, Ph.D, M.E by Research, Diploma and Certificate programmes, applications can be had from the concerned Departments/Schools/Centres either directly or by post.

 

3. Fee Details:

Mode of paymet: Demand Draft taken from SBI and its allied banks drawn

in favour of Registrar, CUSAT payable at Ernakulam only will be accepted.

Rs. 750/- for General Category Candidates and Rs. 400/- for SC/ST Category (for 3

programmes) Rs. 5750/- for candidates who apply under NRI Quota (for 3 programmes)

Rs. 3750/- for those opting Overseas Test centres. (candidates applying under NRI

Quota need not pay this fee) (for 3 programmes) Rs. 100/- for General Category and Rs. 50/- for SC/ST Category for each additional programme exceeding 3

 

For Lateral Entry Programme:-

Rs. 380/- for General Category and Rs. 230/- for SC/ST Category

 

For Diploma/Certificate Programmes:-

Rs.100/- for General Category and Rs.50/- for SC/ST Category

 

4. DDs issued by Exchange Companies/Private Banks will not be accepted. Candidate

should write his/her Name and Registration Number (obtained at the time of Online

Registration) on upper left hand corner of the reverse side of the DD. The DD should be

taken on or after the date of CAT 2008 Notification No.IRAA/227-CAT 08/2007

dt.29/02/2008.

6. Application forms for programmes listed under 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6 are available only

from the respective Departments/Schools

 

7. Entry requirements for each Programme are given under ‘Eligibility Criteria’.

The responsibility for ensuring satisfactory compliance to the prescribed criteria

is vested solely with the applicant. Claims found untenable upon subsequent scrutiny

shall result in summary disqualification of the applicant concerned and cancellation

of any or all admission processes undergone.

 

8. The choice of the Test Subject/Test Centre is the sole responsibility of the applicant

and the selections once exercised in the Application Form shall be final and irrevocable

 

6. FOREIGN NATIONAL STUDENTS

 

1. Foreign National students are exempted from the requirement of admission test

(CAT/DAT) for the academic programmes of the university. They can apply either

on self financing basis or through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)

attched to the Ministry of Human Resources development of the Govt. of India. They

are required to submit the application through online for the academic programme

of the University on payment of US$ 100 by way of Demand Draft / Pay order/Any

other instrument (which does not involve collection charges on the part of the University)

in favour of Registrar, CUSAT payable at New York.

 

2. Applicants who have succesfully Registered online with CUSAT may forward an

advance copy of the confirmation page along with payment (D.D/Pay Order etc)

and relevant documents to the following address. The original confirmation page

should be forwarded with necessary documents through the Embassy of India in the

respective country.

7. HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE

 

I. Candidates are instructed to read thoroughly all sections of Key Information

published in the website : www.cusat.nic.in. before filling up the application

 

II. Candidates are required to fill in all details correctly (SC/ST, Communal /Special

Reservation, under OEC etc.) failing which the claim under the said categories will

not be considered at all.

 

III. Applications without the Demand Draft will be rejected.

 

IV. Incomplete form will not be accepted by the system. Any error in the entries leading

to the rejection of the application form shall be the sole responsibility of the candidate.

Hence the form must be filled with the utmost attention without making any error.

 

V. Detailed instruction is given in the Registration module in the website.

 

VI. Instructions for Photograph and Signature Uploading :-

 

A) Photograph

1. If you are scanning photographs, adjust the scanner to scan at 100 resolution first.

2. Fix the output format of scanned image as grayscale (not black & white)

3. Scan the image to some image editing software like Microsoft paint/ Photoshop

etc.

4. Use “save for web” option to save the image as a JPEG file. No other format will

be accepted.

5. The image dimensions should be approximately 200 pixels (H) x 150 pixels (W)

6. The file size should be less than 10 kilobytes (kb)

 

B) For Digital Photographs

1. Resize the digital photograph to 200 pixels (Height) X 150 pixels (width) first

2. Use the “Save for web” option to save the file (Adobe Photoshop) in JPEG format

3. Make sure that the file size is less than 10 Kilobytes (kb)

 

C) Tip for reducing image file size

1. If you are using image editing software like adobe Photoshop, please use the

“Save for web” option to reduce file size.

2. During “Save for web” option, save the file in JPEG format, “medium” compression

quality

 

D) Signature

1. Adjust the scanner to scan at 100 resolutions first

2. Fix the output format of scanned images grayscale (not black & white)

3. Scan the image to some image editing software like Microsoft paint/ Photoshop etc.

4. Use “save for web” option to save the image as a JPEG file. No other format will

be accepted.

5. The image dimensions should be approximately 80 pixels (Height) x 250 pixels (width)

6. The file size should be less than 5 kilobytes (kb)

 

VII. If any entries are incorrect /missing, press the back button for going back to the

entry form

VIII. If the candidate is satisfied with the entries, press the ‘Confirm’ button for completing

the registration process. Please wait for the Confirmation Page to be displayed and

take two print out. Candidate should retain a copy of confirmation page for their

reference.

9. RETURN OF THE CONFIRMATION PAGE/ FILLED UP APPLICATIONS

 

i Confirmation page of the Online application along with the DD should reach “The

Director, IRAA Unit,Cochin University of Science & Technology,

Cochin University P.O., Kochi - 682022”on or before the last date prescribed above

either by Speed or Registered Post.

ii Sale of Application forms for the programmes listed under 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 & 3.6

commences on 29.02.2008. Filled up applications should reach the concerned

Departments/Schools on or before 10.04.2008.
